I don't know about Arabic; Unlike English, which is a wordy language, Hebrew is a fairly terse and compact language.. Hence, the spelling is rendered awkward. For instance, take the city Lod. You pronounce it Lod. We pronounce it Lood. The same with the city Yafo (in Hebrew) where as you pronounce it Yafa (in Hebrew it means beautiful. And it's not the right pronunciation.)
