It's a dog chasing its tail issue. It's possible that poverty causes crime. OR that affluent people avoid violent conflict.
But from studying the issue...and statistics don't come into play because poor people seem to be disproportionately represented in crime statistics thus giving a skewed view of the problem. But that's a subject for another essay.
In short from my understanding statistics may not give you a full understanding of the issue.
