Today, by comparison, conspiracy theories are much more widely disseminated and believed and the more outlandish they are, the higher the number of credulous rubes there seem to be who will gladly buy into them. If a particular one doesn’t quite support their worldview, it can be made to fit it. There is money to be made off of ignorance and that’s why there will always be snake oil salesmen who continue to peddle them.
