I have never been one to seek out social situations. I find solace in quiet evenings at home with a good book or movie.
This preference was solidified the last time I attended a party and engaged in conversation. The woman I chatted with seemed determined to one-up me constantly. When I mentioned my profession as a writer, she boasted about winning first place for her high school poem. When I shared my passion for weightlifting, she dismissed it as not for her and claimed she preferred jogging.
For as long as I’ve known her, I’ve seen people fawn over her designer clothes, expensive accessories, and a luxury car. Each compliment would make her face light up as if she were the embodiment of all that was good in the world.
Her white smile could have been lifted straight from a toothpaste commercial, and her blue eyes sparkled like shards of glass. It always struck me as odd how simply owning material possessions garnered admiration. She may see herself as special, but in reality, she just had added layers of insulation against misfortune.
As she talked, I nodded, hearing little as the woman unrolled her life. Machineline…
