What a wonderful question, David. The following is going to be long-winded. I didn’t know how to shorten it, and I don’t think that I answered in full. Therefore, I will write more about it. Thanks for giving me another thing to write about. Here it goes….
It is a mistake to believe that an evolutionary explanation of gender inequality is bad news for feminism. Explaining human behavior does not compare to justifying it or defending it. But if we want to change our society for the better, we probably need an accurate understanding of human nature.
Some scientists argue that male domination is an anomaly of human history, not a natural state for the human species. The face of science has changed and continues to change. Maybe that’s why we see women appear side by side with men at the forefront of many fields, and this is remarkably true in evolutionary biology. And we should celebrate the outstanding achievements and contributions of women in evolutionary biology. Highlighting their research and accomplishments help to enhance the visibility of female scientists and provide inspiration as well as role models.
